OVERVIEW
This sail has been developed and tested extensively in a wide range of conditions from Australia to Denmark and Gran Canaria as we wanted to give you that one perfect wave sail that does it all. We have added many new innovative features and are proud to deliver the most radical and most complete wave sail we’ve ever designed. Reduced overall weight, same strength: The LTD won't let you down when other sails break. Travel light and make the 4Wave LTD your first choice for any wave, any day, anywhere!
What people love about the original 4Wave is still here: The power, the drive, the durability. What some were missing we've managed to add: The lightness, the agility and the magic. Get your 4Wave LTD now!!
MAIN FEATURES
BACKHAND POWER CONTROL 2.0: For the 4Wave LTD we could radically improve the backhand power control concept that originates from our 4Wave and 5Wave sails.
On the LTD we have more agility, more release but the same mighty low-end the 4Wave is known for. By defining the profile of the sail with a special mix of materials (instead of pre-profile built into the sail) we can control the twist of the sail body in a unique way that offers you that little bit of extra horsepower – available whenever you need it. The total wind range of the LTD has been extended significantly with improved high-end control.
ADAPTIVE WIND RELEASE (AWR): The brand new AWR system takes the backhand power control approach to the next level. By opening the AWR system you allow the sail to release the wind more efficiently. The power draft moves forward slightly, offering a more agile, more playful and more forgiving ride while maintaining the same early planing ability. If you like a radical surf-like feeling the open setting is for you!.
The closed AWR system creates a more locked-in powerful sensation with extra backhand power. This setup increases the sail’s top leverage and provides added traction to the board on large bumpy waves, fully powered conditions like Pozo or when using it in flat water high-wind sailing. The sail demands a more focussed rider now. If you seek maximum power for big moves, competitive sailing and bump-and-jump blasting try closing the AWR system.
NOTE: Changing the AWR settings is different to changing the downhaul: Keeping a baggy sail while changing the loose leech release behaviour?! Now you can!!
AEROFIT BOOM POSITIONING (ABP): This unique and brand new feature eliminates all downsides of a traditional boom opening. By reducing the open area at the leading edge of the sail we have improved the aerodynamic efficiency of the sail. This results in a wider total range of use. The second effect of the ABP is the limited range of movement of the sail body in the boom area. The sail will be more stable in the gusts and will react much quicker in any rotations.
HOW TO USE: Always open a minimum of two sections to mount your boom. This gives the flexibility to play with your boom height in case the conditions are changing. If you expect to share your sail with a taller or smaller rider during one session simply open more sections while rigging the LTD.
POWER PANEL DESIGN: Key to the LTD's outstanding efficiency is the wide outline in the centre of the sail while keeping a relatively short boom. The panel above the boom gets the cleanest airflow.
That’s why we like to call it the “power panel”. It creates this sail’s controlled drive and power while the narrow top guarantees a perfect and smooth clew-first behaviour. This sail's mighty low-end acceleration will easily outperform bigger sails, so for the full experience make sure to ride your 4Wave LTD 0.2 - 0.5 sqm smaller than you usually would! With one pull of the backhand you can always unleash the power while you benefit from faster rotations and more radical turns on a smaller and lighter sail and last but not least a much better wipeout-resistance of a smaller sail in big surf. When you can ride a 4.8 in 5.0/5.3 conditions imagine the crazy handling advantages of a 4.8 compared to bigger rigs!
FREEFLOW BATTENS: We have carefully adjusted the batten angles to improve the release in top turns and big jumps. This allows the loose leech to work more efficiently. The LTD feels lighter and more reactive than the original 4Wave now. A new stiffer batten construction above the boom locks the power in more forward and extends the wind range significantly in difficult and gusty conditions as the sail's trailing edge is more flat and creates less drag.
RIG IT RIGHT
1) Pick your preferred mast
We suggest our recommended mast but don’t hesitate to play with the mast stiffness. All PATRIK mast bases and tops are interchangeable. Create even more custom curves to adapt the sail to your needs. A softer mast will make the sail more reactive but less powerful and more likely to break up with heavy riders. A stiffer base will give the sail more profile and power in the boom area. Changing masts should be an optional step of fine-tuning as the recommended masts have been selected carefully after many hours of testing. For light riders below 70 kgs, youth and women we certainly recommend reaching for the next softer mast. Don’t be afraid of long extensions.
RDM 100% CARBON provides a quicker, more responsive sail with a lighter rig setup, perfect for early planing and maximum performance.
RDM 80% CARBON offers a more forgiving feel in choppy, windy conditions. You win some extra durability in huge surf while being more budget-friendly .
RDM 60% CARBON is not recommended on a performance sail due to the extra weight and slower response. (We do not guarantee the full performance of the sail on third party masts. Ask your PATRIK shop or partner for advice before using any third party rig components on the LTD.)
2) Decide on the Aerofit Boom Positioning settings
For maximum performance open 2 sections of the ABP. Most boom heads require two open slots and it gives you some room to adjust your boom height during the session. If in doubt just leave one more open until you find your perfect boom height. The "0" setting is meant to be a starting point for an 185cm rider.
3) Choose your preferred AWR setting
This setting will modify the release characteristics without further affecting the trim and profile. This setting can of course be adjusted during the session when the sail is rigged.
4) Set your personal downhaul tension
Set your desired style with the downhaul and normally don't touch this setting during the session. Use the outhaul in step 5 instead to power and de-power the sail. For the best balance of power and control pull until the loose leech wrinkles reach the yellow seam between the top batten and second batten of the sail. Less downhaul will give you more forward drive, a slower response and more traction to the board. More downhaul gives you a softer release in top-turns and hard landings and of course an extended high-end.
5) Adjust the outhaul
Adjust the power and directness of the sail by setting your outhaul. On the minimum outhaul setting the batten above the boom should just be able to be flipped to the other side with one hand. The batten tip will be well in front of the mast. The sail will touch the boom while riding. The sail will feel powerful and baggy with extremely good pumping ability. On the perfect outhaul setting your sail has about 2-3cm tension from the untensioned “zero” position. The batten above the boom will be half-way behind the mast. The sail will only touch the boom in strong gusts and will feel more neutral on the backhand and more direct in rotations. The on/off ability will be fully available. The sail will load and de-power and provide a wide range of power. On the +3 highest setting the sail will be pretty flat with extended high-end control and a very direct feel. Planing and pumping will be compromised for a flat and stable profile.
Note: Even though we use mostly the outhaul to control the power there is a correlation between downhaul and outhaul tension. The minimum outhaul setting for maximum downhaul will be extensively more than the minimum outhaul setting for minimum downhaul. Look at the shape of the sail, not at the spec box numbers only.
6) Go sailing Enjoy a perfect wave session on your new 4Wave LTD!
